Key Largo is to be found at the north end of The Keys with Islamorada, Marathon and Key West being further south. One of the finest known areas in the environs of Key Largo is the John Pennekamp State Park. .

Well-known as the first protected park located underwater, John Pennekamp State Park is an area full of fabulous dive sites. Whilst Key West may be the place to go for an all round experience, for many travelling to Florida scuba diving the spotlight is on ‘the diving’ and Key Largo has an unbelievable choice.

One of the greatest things about any Florida scuba diving trip to Key Largo is the great variety of dive sites and shipwrecks giving a thrilling experience for novice and skilled divers.

For the practiced diver a Florida scuba trip would not be complete without scuba diving the Spiegel Grove. This 510ft ship was deliberately sunk in 2002 and was the single biggest ship ever sunk off the coast of Florida.

This shipwreck is located in deeper waters and can be quite a test to skilled divers and is off limits to inexperienced divers. The restricted bottom time means this wreck has to take more than one dive to fully explore.

Some Florida scuba dive sites have unique and amazing experiences such as Christ of the Abyss in Key Largo. This world famed dive site has a 4000lb effigy so tall that it is easily viewed from the surface. Donated by Egidi Cressi in 1962 to the Underwater Society of America, the effigy was sunk on its concrete base in just 22 feet of water on the seaward side of the reef.

As underwater photography has improved and developed to be easier over the years one site to call on has to be Molasses Reef. One of Key Largo most popular and visited scuba dive sites this reef system is one of outstanding beauty and a must do dive for every person. Extraordinary marine life providing lovely colors makes Molasses Reef one of the most photographed reefs in the world. The clear and comparatively shallow waters means the lighting is just right and with some spectacular marine life as your scenery and subjects you cannot help but take some amazing underwater pictures.

A number of divers just love diving shipwrecks and any Florida scuba trip to Key Largo can include many shipwreck dives.

The USS Spiegel Grove can be a difficult dive but there are additional shipwrecks in Key Largo such as the two cutters USS Duane and USS Bibb which are thrilling but easier dives. Now well matured, these 2 shipwrecks provide an exciting experience with easy access to both ships as they were fully prepared for scuba divers prior to their sinking.
